"Inspiration is like a fledgeling bird it will eventually learn to fly"
I was born in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1964 and after many years working in the retail and customer service sectors I decided to go back to University at the age of 37.
Prior to this, I had been a successful self taught artist working mainly in acrylics, fine pen work, gouache and watercolour. Many people who observe my unique hand built ceramics for the first time can generally tell I am from a "painterly background".
I held several exhibitions and sold the majority of my paintings regularly. Notably one to the Marquis of Bath, Lord Bath of Longleat for the Wessex Collection.
I hold a Higher National Diploma in Ceramics and 3Dimensional Design graduating with Distinctions in 2005. In July 2013 I graduated with Distinctions gaining my Btec HNED Higher National Extended Diploma in Horticulture & Garden Design. I have a small garden design and maintenance business which I run along side my ceramics business and a new website for the garden business is under construction.
I am a proud Blackpool lad and the North West of England was where I was born and I chose the beautiful county of Cumbria as the inspirational place to set up Edge Ceramics and my studio/workshop in 2005. Choosing the High Westmorland village of Shap which is nestled in a miniature lea, in the shadow of the Summit of the famed Shap Fell on the eastern fringes of the Lake District National Park.
I am a ceramic artist and draw my inspiration from the unique high fells, steep ghylls, lofty isolated summits and rocky outcrops which make up this largely unspoilt part of the Eden Valley and the North Pennines.
My small studio is situated in my beautiful fell side garden which faces the eastern fringes of the Lake District National Park. This magnificent, unspoilt landscape changes every day and this together with the often volatile weather that the area is famous for continues to inspire me.
There are many inspirational landscapes in the United Kingdom like the heights of a fell side or the depths of a serene forest or the windswept open air of the seaside and coast.
My work encompasses the ceramic techniques of hand building, slab work and coiling giving my ceramics an often rugged and natural feel.
These combine strikingly with my natural colouring oxides, unique mark making and my own Stoneware Glazes give my ceramics a very natural look and feel.
My ranges start from as little as £15 upto hundreds of pounds. I create functional bowls and dishes, plates and platters as well as sculptural and artistic objects, suitable for using inside the home or outside in the garden.
