Clay is a natural resource and I try to minimise my useage of clay by recycling, reusing and reclaiming any waste clay. I also use lots of recycled objects to be included in specially designed garden Sculpture. I feel this is a great way of reusing and recycling something instead of it going into burgeoning landfills.
I will be regularly adding to and updating this page. The opinions I express in my personal environmental statement are purely my views.
Natural Benefits for Business NB4B Pilot Project
In Cumbria. This has been a joint project funded by Natural England, NW Regional Development Agency and SITA. Other key partners have been the NW Biodiversity Forum, Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership and Cumbria Rural
Enterprise Agency.
This project has enabled businesses including mine to get advice on the benefits to them and the natural environment of directly engaging with biodiversity. I am pleased to have taken part in this project as a case study

Biodiversity and Edge Ceramics in conjunction with Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency & Cumbria Business Environment Network (CREA & CBEN).
I have consistantly gained awards from both CREA & CBEN due to my ongoing efforts to make an environmental connection to my business and my garden and the greater local environment. I have installed two wildlife ponds and a wild flower meadow as well as planted a new wildlife border, and a nectar garden for our bees & butterflies.
As my studio is located in my garden it seems natural to make the environments link up and connect for the benefits of birds and wildlife and especially butterflies & bees and other pollinators. By placing shelters and bird houses and feeders around my garden, I hope by doing my bit helps in the long run.

The Environment and Edge Ceramics A statement by Steve Valentine
In this day and age it seems that the Environment and good business practice go hand in hand. As a responsible owner of a small ceramics studio/workshop, I am very aware of my impacts affecting the Environment.
I am also aware that my studio practice is located at Shap village in the midst of several important and very fragile areas of England. The Shap Fells SSSI area, The Lake District National Park, The Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines AONB.
I would like these areas to stay exactly like they are and
I would not like my business to affect the fragility, natural beauty and importance of these areas ensuring they
are still the same for our future generations to
witness.
I have always made sure that I run my little business with the Environment in mind, I try to minimise wasteage by reducing, recycling and reuseing throughout my practice
that is from the clay I use to the packaging.
I am a firm believer in the little things you do, can make a big difference in the long run. I am very proud of what I have done and continue doing.
I am very proud to have retained my Gold Award in recogniton of achieving excellence in environmental and biodiversity practice from CBEN (Cumbria Business Environment Network) throughout 2008 to 2009 and upto 2013.
