Cobalt & Silver nitrate starburst glaze detail on Azure Tarn Bowl
Colour is a major feature of my ceramics and I use only the subtle shades of nature to compliment the natural feel of my clay creations.
I use the natural oxides in powder form diluted in water as these give the best results and give the most organic look that manmade equivelants do not provide.
Oxides come in many shades and feature strongly on my surfaces, forming the link with the natural form of the clay. All these elements need to look right and compliment each other as the end result needs to match the enhancing glazes.
There are the natural earth oxides or pigments and the metallic oxides and I use both types. Sometimes together and sometimes singularly.
Oxides are usually very strong and sometimes the tiniest amount can mean the difference between something that looks right or something that looks wrong.
Metal oxides are very powerful and I use several including Black and Red Iron Oxide and Yellow Iron Oxide as well as Copper Oxide on artistic forms. I use many earth oxides including Cobalt and Vanadium Pentoxide.
Because my ceramics are inspired by the natural environment and its landscapes any bright colours would look comical on my forms.
The colour of something creates a mood and that mood can change very regularly. My colours are fundamental to the natural look and feel of my ceramics.
